What EverFree gives you

The note app that just works. And some more.

01

Keep writing on every screen

Use the full Mac editor, write in any desktop browser, or capture and edit from your phone. It is one synced workspace.

02

Think with AI beside the page

Select a paragraph and ask EverFree to continue it, tighten it etc. Search for facts. Generate contextual images. Use your own keys.

03

Leave Evernote with your history

The Mac app imports your notebooks and turns them into ordinary Markdown. Your old writing comes with you.

04

Keep the exit door open forever

Your notes are plain files in a private repo you control

05

Give your coding agents memory

The Mac app ships an MCP server. Claude Code can search your notes and write back to them. What it records shows up here.

All I needed was a place to write

I am a compulsive note-taker and had a thousand+ notes in Evernote. Bending Spoons decided to hike up renewal fees by 5x and it cost me $100 just for access to my own notes

That was the wake-up call. My notes are not your product. They are memory. And they should be mine. For free.

Why it will always be free

GitHub is the backend. Your repo is the database.

Sign in once and EverFree creates one private repository named everfree-notes. The web app saves directly to it. The Mac app also keeps your notes in ~/Documents/EverFree and syncs the same workspace.

There is no EverFree account, no EverFree notes database, and no storage plan to upsell. You do not need to know git. And web/mobile will be through a free vercel app.

From Evernote to EverFree

Out in three steps.

  1. Download the Mac app

Open the signed and notarized DMG. No terminal, package manager, or Gatekeeper workaround.

  2. Bring your archive

Connect Evernote during setup and import your old notebooks as Markdown — or skip this if you are starting fresh.

  3. Write from anywhere

Connect GitHub once. EverFree creates your private everfree-notes repo, and the same notes appear on web and mobile.

The practical bits

FAQ

What is the catch?

There isn't a paid tier hiding behind the useful features. EverFree is MIT-licensed open source, with no plan, trial, or EverFree account.

Do I need to understand GitHub?

No. You sign in with a device code and EverFree handles the fixed private everfree-notes repo. You never need to run a git command.

Can I import from Evernote?

Yes. The Mac setup walks you through connecting Evernote and converts your notebooks to Markdown. Import is optional.

What can the AI assistant do?

It can work with the current note or selected text to continue, rewrite, explain, question, or brainstorm. Add your own Google Gemini key; EverFree does not charge you for AI.

Where are my notes stored?

As Markdown in your private everfree-notes GitHub repo. On Mac they also live in ~/Documents/EverFree.

Why does GitHub ask for repo access?

GitHub does not offer single-repository access for this OAuth flow. EverFree asks for the required repo scope, but its code only creates, reads, and writes your fixed everfree-notes repository.
